MESSAGE FROM Mayor Doug McCallum State-of-the-art facilities and high-quality programs are the hallmarks of the recreational offerings in Surrey. As we head into longer days and warmer weather, Surrey Parks, Recreation and Culture are excited to offer programs for all ages, interests and skill levels. The City of Surrey is continually expanding and upgrading recreation facilities and parkland. City Council recently approved 9 new projects in the 2022-2026 Capital Financial Budget, which will see new pickleball courts at Crescent Beach, a 3rd field hockey turf atTamanawis Park and numerous improvements for our parks. The new projects are in addition to 16 public infrastructure projects funded in the 2021 budget. The first component of the new Community Centre in Newton will see the construction of a new Olympic size, 50-meter swimming pool. The new state-of-the-art Newton Recreation Centre will be on a 6.5-acre site at 6965 King George Boulevard and will be the focal point for residents to socialize, exercise, and play. The new Bear Creek Athletics Centre has moved into the construction phase with an opening date set for Spring 2023. When completed, the Athletics Centre will feature a new covered grandstand with seating for 2,200 people, new washrooms and change rooms, new turf field and a track upgraded to international standards. The City of Surrey is also expanding Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre to keep pace with the growth in City Centre. In Cloverdale, a new destination Sport and Ice Complex is in the works that will expand the number of ice sheets in Surrey. The ice complex in Cloverdale is also designed to be used year-round. During the summer months, the arena floor will be used for sports such as lacrosse and ball hockey. As the City of Parks, Council has made it a priority to purchase property for the expressed purpose of creating new parkland. Since 2019, Council has committed more than $45 million in parkland acquisition which has resulted in over 240-acres of new parkland added in Surrey. As we continue to build strong, healthy communities where people of all ages can be active and engaged for life, I invite you to take advantage of our recreational facilities and the quality programs led by our highly trained staff. A healthy and active lifestyle awaits you right here in Surrey.
