MESSAGE FROM Mayor Doug McCallum With the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, summer is a perfect time to explore the programs offered by Surrey Parks, Recreation and Culture. Whether it’s learning a new dance step, a new workout routine or a new sport, there is a program for all skill levels and all ages. Summer is a season of discovery and adventure It’s that time of year where hot, sunny weather leads to sandcastles, ice cream and fireworks. It’s a time to get active as well as a time to relax. Between outdoor concerts, family cookouts and evening strolls, our spirits radiate as colourfully and vibrantly as the nature that surrounds us. Summer in Surrey is yours to discover, and this season, anything is possible.

Elgin Heritage Park is a natural wonder. Located on the banks of the Nicomekl River, the park welcomes thousands of migrating birds twice a year in a spectacle that will delight any aviary enthusiast. With close proximity to the ocean, it’s not uncommon to spot otters, seals and a variety of shorebirds on your visit as well.The park’s wide, gravel trails offer a scenic escape through marsh, forest and meadow habitats, across boardwalks, along the river, and past Historic Stewart Farm. Observe barn owls at the mini-barn and be sure to bring your binoculars to spot the elusive great horned owl—who also calls the park home. Whether you take a stroll through the forest, visit the picturesque gardens, or cool off in the spray park, Fleetwood Park offers something for everyone. Enjoy the 1.8 km loop trail that takes about 30 minutes to walk or challenge yourself to the more rugged nature trail that winds through the inner part of the forest. Keep your eyes and ears open to appreciate the park’s complex ecosystem. Amongst bigleaf maples covered in moss and licorice ferns, a variety of fish can be found swimming in Fleetwood Creek, while woodpeckers hammer on the trees above. Fleetwood Park 15802 80 Avenue
One of Surrey’s most popular parks, Bear Creek Park is home to a variety of diverse wildlife, including owls, eagles, ducks and salmon.Traverse a network of trails across meadows, forests and streams while admiring the indigenous flora and fauna. Beyond the trails, you’ll find a beautiful display garden to explore, in addition to sports fields, a playground, a running track, picnic areas and shelters, an outdoor swimming pool and a spray park.
Crescent Park 2585 132 Street Boasting over 120 acres, Crescent Park is one of Surrey’s largest parks. Eagles, owls, frogs and coyotes are among the wildlife you might see as you walk through the forests of this former logging camp— once integral to the City’s early economic prosperity. The park’s evergreen trees transition to deciduous, as you approach an extensive network of trails.The pond loop is wide and compact, perfect for casual strolling. Trails through the forest offer a variety of slopes and terrain for those looking for a more intense workout. Follow the outermost trail that encompasses the 3.8 km perimeter of the park to get those steps in or choose a shorter path along the way and enjoy the park’s picnic tables and shelters, baseball diamonds or multi-purpose fields.
Bose Forest Park 6203 164 Street
Bose Forest Park is one of Surrey’s newest parks, opening in 2017. With an abundance of old-growth trees, including Douglas fir, western red cedar and big leaf maple, the park is a naturalist’s paradise. Families often choose to spend the day, packing a picnic and stopping off at the nature-themed playground, before hitting the trails. Walking the boardwalk over rare swamp habitat, it’s easy to understand why B.C.’s ecosystems are so important. Pay special attention to the decaying trees in the forested areas; they are some of the best places to spot woodpeckers and owls!

RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES In addition to our indoor recreational facilities, the City of Surrey offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. Get out and explore our nature trails and gardens, public tennis courts, youth parks, water parks, bike trails and more and stay active for life.
You may be surprised to learn that Whalley, including City Centre, has 40 different parks and outdoor facilities! From the forest trails and fishing lake in GreenTimbers Urban Forest, to the river views and sandy beach at Brownsville Bar, there is no shortage of outdoor fun to be had in Surrey’s hub!
GARDENS Horticultural Gardens
NATURE TRAILS Spot an owl or an eagle’s nest and watch for returning salmon at Bear Creek Park; discover the wetlands, grassland meadows, marsh and lake at Green Timbers Urban Forest Park; or take in the diverse habitats at Hawthorne Rotary Park. DOG OFF-LEASH AREAS Bear Creek Park, Kennedy Park, Tannery Road Park, Bolivar Park, and Forsyth Park in Whalley offer dog off-leash areas with plenty of space to roam and play. Before you unleash your dog in the designated park space, please remember the off- leash etiquette.
Explore the gardens in Bear Creek Park, including specialty floral, ornamental grass and shade garden beds, or marvel at the various horticultural beds in Holland Park. Community Gardens Whalley offers two Community Gardens: Cedar Grove Organic Community Garden, and Queen Elizabeth Meadows Community Garden. YOUTH PARKS Whalley is home to three youth parks—KwantlenYouth Park, Chuck BaileyYouth Park and Bear CreekYouth Park—offering a variety of skateboard and BMX features for all skill levels. BIKE PARKS Quibble Creek Greenway features a small pump trail, which is great for honing skills like cornering and jumping. WATER PARKS Bridgeview Park, Bear Creek Park and Hawthorne Park spray parks are activated by push buttons when it is warmer than 20 degrees Celsius. Both areas offer many additional amenities, such as walking paths, sports fields and picnic areas. In the summer, don’t miss Bear Creek Park’s train and mini golf facility. OUTDOOR POOLS Enjoy a free public swim or book your summer swimming lessons at Kwantlen Outdoor Pool. Check online for dates and operating hours. PICKLEBALL /TENNIS Check to see what public outdoor courts are located in your neighbourhood. Some are lit for night time use until 10:30pm. For more information visit surrey.ca/tennis-pickleball. Boasting 38 distinct parks, Guildford and Fraser Heights offer a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. From the forest trails and salmon spawning creeks inTynehead Regional Park, to the tennis courts at Douglas Park and the picnic areas in the wide open grass in Guildford Heights Park, there’s something different to see and do at each of the area’s open air destinations. RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES In addition to our indoor recreational facilities, the City of Surrey offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. Get out and explore our nature trails and gardens, public tennis courts, youth parks, water parks, bike trails and more and stay active for life.
BIKE PARKS Suitable for intermediate to advanced riders, the forested area in Port Kells Park features a dirt jump track with seven jumps in total and two berm turns at both ends of the jumps. Invergarry Park is home to a vast forest and nature area, as well as one of the region’s largest and most popular downhill mountain bike parks. YOUTH PARKS Are you a skateboarder, BMX bike rider, in-line skater, or scooter-rider? Guildford has two skate parks where you can develop your skills and learn new tricks: GuildfordYouth Park and Fraser HeightsYouth Park. DOG OFF-LEASH AREAS Tynehead Regional Park and Fraserview Park offers a great place to let your pooch loose to run, play and enjoy a social environment. WATER PARKS Guildford’s Erma Stephenson spray park and water playground is open from mid- May until September 30. Spray parks are activated by push buttons when it is warmer than 20° Celsius. OUTDOOR POOLS Enjoy a free dip or take swim lessons at one of Guildford’s three outdoor pools: Holly, Port Kells and Hjorth Road. Pools are open during the summer months only. GARDENS Community Gardens Guildford offers two community gardens: Holly Park and Lionel Courchene Park. For more information or to get involved, visit surrey.ca/ communitygardens. NATURE TRAILS Tynehead Regional Park consists of rolling meadow and forest on the banks of the Serpentine River providing an ideal habitat for owls, hawks and coyotes. The river offers views of spawning salmon. The new Surrey Bend Regional Park is located on one of the few remaining large, un-diked sections of the lower Fraser River, delivering a treasure trove of ecological sights and sounds. RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES In addition to our indoor recreational facilities, the City of Surrey offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. Get out and explore our nature trails and gardens, public tennis courts, youth parks, water parks, bike trails and more and stay active for life.
You’ll find a wide variety of recreational amenities in Fleetwood, both indoors and out. Every family member will find something to do, whether it’s taking the dog for a walk in one of 32 parks, kicking a soccer ball, enjoying a picnic or taking the little ones to the spray park. When it’s time to come inside, residents can stay active at one of two fitness centres, relax in the pool or play hockey at the arena.The options are endless.
GARDENS Horticultural Gardens A perfect place for family outings, special occasions or some relaxing down time, Fleetwood Gardens offers a kaleidoscope of colourful plants and floral displays. Explore the cherry walk, labyrinth and sculptural art, while enjoying the wildlife in and around Fleetwood Creek. YOUTH PARKS The FleetwoodYouth Park is located at the Surrey Sports & Leisure Complex. It is plaza style, featuring a drop in, mini quarter pipe; slappy wall with rails; as well as boxes, free standing rails and a small amphitheatre with edges. The park also has a basketball half- court with lots of seating.
NATURE TRAILS Take a 30-minute stroll along the 1.8 kilometre nature trail around Fleetwood Park, offering visitors peaceful reflection within its urban forest. More beauty can be found in the tranquil setting of the Charles Richardson Nature Reserve—one of the best places in the city to see waterfowl. Godwin Farm Biodiversity Preserve Park, which is home to a variety of bird life, offers a looping trail network where you can explore natural assets including riparian areas, rare trees, an old fruit garden and a pond. DOG OFF-LEASH AREAS Freedom Dog Park lives up to its name, providing over 1.25 hectares (3 acres) of open space for free running your dog. The park provides a balanced terrain with lots of grass and open gravel areas as well as a looping trail through the forest. Fleetwood water playground and spray park, and then enjoy a picnic and wildlife spotting around Fleetwood Creek.
