DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW PARKS, RECREATION & CULTURE
MISSION STATEMENT We enhance the quality of life in our communities by working together to: Provide and facilitate the development of high quality parks, facilities, services and events; Embrace and foster diversity and community identity; Ensure accessibility and inclusivity; Champion environmental and cultural stewardship; Encourage and support individual and community wellness; and Develop, deliver and preserve cultural and educational resources and services. We will accomplish our mission through active partnerships and a community development approach. KEY PROGRAMS AND SERVICES The programs, facilities and services of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department reflect people working together to improve recreation opportunities and enhance the quality of life for residents of Surrey. While working alongside the community, the department supports individuals and community wellness, environmental stewardship, cultural diversity, arts and heritage services, and community development. The department divisions include:
COMMUNITY RECREATION Community & Recreation Services (CRS) is responsible for the efficient and effective operation of community pools, arenas, recreation and community centres throughout the City, while building healthy communities for all people to be active and engaged for life. This division, with partners in the Surrey community, facilitates and delivers programs and services that are accessible for seniors, youth, children and families. Community & Recreation Services engages participation through volunteerism and by leading an inclusive approach towards reaching out to involve members of Surrey’s diverse community, including people with disabilities, in all service areas.
PARKS SERVICES The Parks Division is responsible for the planning, development, operation and maintenance of approximately 2,700 hectares of parkland, a civic marina and three cemeteries. The Division also oversees the stewardship of the natural environment and the street tree program, and facilitates the provision of nature-based programs. The Division works with the community to program the use of all outdoor athletic facilities and community gardens to optimize use. The Division hosts major events throughout the year, provides advice and permits to community event organizers and is a one-stop agency for filming within the City. Civic Beautification offers a range of initiatives and resources aimed at engaging the public and making public spaces more attractive.
