Public Art IN SURREY
by Laara Cerman Bike racks are useful, but they don’t have to be boring. Take a look at the new one in Fleetwood that shows how art can animate ordinary utilities and speak to its local context. Laara Cerman’s tree-shaped design The Frasers references Fleetwood’s natural and built characteristics, including the neighbourhood’s many wooded areas. The diagonal lines depict Fraser Highway yet could also represent the Fraser River. To cap it off is one of the most iconic sights seen from Fleetwood: the breathtaking Mount Baker. Another creative bike rack is coming to the Surrey Arts Centre later this year, designed by SofiaTanWu.
