POLICE SERVICES November 29, 2024 marked the beginning of a new era of policing in Surrey, as Surrey Police Service (“SPS”) became the City’s police of jurisdiction. SPS has three policing bureaus: Community Policing, Corporate Services and Investigative Services, in addition to the Office of the Chief Constable. Together with the support of the Lower Mainland Integrated Teams, these bureaus support the community, policing operations, prevention and intervention strategies, and investigative efforts. Currently, the City maintains a minimum complement of 785 combined SPS/RCMP officers for adequate and effective policing in Surrey. These officers are administratively supported by over 450 full-time and part time civilian employees plus several auxiliary members and community volunteers. SPS continues to grow and will hire both recruits and experienced officers until they have a full staffing complement. Hiring of police officers will be aligned with the City of Surrey's annual policing budget, which provided funding for a total of 810 police officers in 2025. The RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (“SPOSU”) is currently providing temporary policing support until SPS is fully established as a standalone police agency. SPOSU’s presence in Surrey will, over time, be reduced and RCMP members demobilized in alignment with SPS’s growth. Policing Services are delivered to citizens via SPS Headquarters at the Justice Complex on Highway 10 and from five community policing stations across Surrey. SPS is a progressive, community-based police agency that is accountable to the community it serves through a civilian police board. Citizens needing assistance in an emergency should continue to call 911 or if they wish to report an incident, they should continue to call the non-emergency number 604-599-0502.
