SAFETY TIPS Maintain Your Bike.
Pay Attention to Your Surroundings. Be aware of nearby cars, as they don’t always look for bikes. Watch out for potholes or debris on the road or car doors opening ahead of you. Follow Traffic Laws . Obey all traffic signs and signals and yield to pedestrians on shared pathways, at bus stops and at intersections. Use hand signals to communicate your intent to turn, slow down or stop to other road users.
Be Seen and Heard. You are required by law to have a front white light, a rear red light, and a bell or horn. Consider reflective clothing for extra visibility. These will help you see and be seen, especially at night. Ride in the Bike Lane. Ride in the bike lane or as far to the right as practicable. When there is no bike lane on the street, you are legally allowed to take the full vehicle lane. Bikes are allowed to ride on shared pathways but must yield to pedestrians. It is illegal to bike on the sidewalk unless a street sign allows.
Check to make sure your brakes work well, your chain is lubricated, and your tires are inflated. When sitting, you should be able to still reach the ground with your foot, allowing you to safely stop if required. Wear a Helmet. It’s the law and will protect your head in a fall. Make sure it fits properly and is regularly replaced.
