Sign of Signs at City of Surrey’s Operations Centre

This kinetic sculpture by Alan Storey depicts the transformation of a Surrey landscape through spliced photographs on a metal frame. The artist did research at the Surrey Historical Archives to source three different images of a single landscape over a period of eighty years — Pacific Highway #15 near 40 Avenue. The images rotate similarly to a commercial advertising billboard, yet their rotation is powered by the wind, creating a randomly combined version of the landscape over time. Sign of Signs mimics the shape and proportions of the Operation Centre’s distinct architectural form.
