Surrey's population at the end of 2016 comprised approximately 20.2% of the population of Metro Vancouver. Over the next five years, this will rise to 20.8%, as Surrey's share of regional population growth in this time period is expected to be between 28-29%. This expected growth is consistent with Metro Vancouver's Regional Growth Strategy estimates for Surrey's growth rate, and is slightly lower than the growth rate experienced in Surrey over the past decade. This level of growth is considered to be robust, but manageable. The following chart shows Surrey’s growth for the period of 2011—2016 based on Statistics Canada’s 2016 Census compared to Vancouver, Metro Vancouver, British Columbia and Canada.
