OBJECTIVE
7.1 Design a city where biodiversity can flourish.
POLICY ACTIONS
7.1.1
Support the city ’s connected network of natural areas by preserving and restoring riparian areas and watercourses and linking them with upland natural areas . Ensure development is planned and designed to avoid, minimize and, where unavoidable, mitigate adverse impacts on wildlife habitat and riparian areas. Facilitate the protection of the Biodiversity Conservation Strategy 's Green Infrastructure Network (GIN) and regularly review and adapt policies to ensure its successful implementation. Target ecologically significant lands when protecting land in the GIN. Integrate wildlife crossing mitigation considerations into drainage culvert upgrades in keeping with the Biodiversity Conservation Strategy .

Increase biodiversity values through implementation of the Biodiversity Design Guidelines , development permitting, public education and relevant bylaws. Use programming and resources to raise public awareness of ecosystem services and the value of nature. Provide property owners with guidance on retaining habitat and native plant species. Pursue opportunities to partner with other levels of government, neighbouring jurisdictions, private land interests and community groups to protect lands through other means, in such areas as:

a. Sensitive ecosystems;

b. Critical habitat for species at risk;
c. Forested escarpments along the Fraser River; and

d. Forested floodplains.
