Like many of you, I was not born in Surrey; today it is a community of which I am proud to be part. Like many of you, I commute to work, to the School of International Studies at SFU and the Department of Liberal Studies at

BCIT, where I teach. Spending time in these places and on bus and train each day clarifies for me what makes Surrey a great place to live. It’s the city where people have the best shot at raising their kids, and caring for older relatives, where crying babies and barking dogs still have a place. It is a city where people can still find affordable rent. And it’s a city of tremendous tolerance and diversity. But these things are under threat. I co-founded Proudly Surrey not just to defend tolerance, affordability and diversity but to improve those things, and turn our city around.

I see the symptoms my patients suffer from and I know what the root causes are. I am running for council, so I can address these root causes and help the citizens of Surrey

live better, longer lives. My father was an educator and my mother a nurse; I grew up in an environment where helping people was the norm. In 2010, upon completion of my MBA in Leadership from Royal Roads University, I was awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal for the most outstanding thesis in the University. I have learned a lot from my patients and I would like to bring a strong voice to Surrey council promoting a healthy community for all. As one of my patients so kindly stated, “Yes! Dr Patton is a genuine community advocate and a leader. I can’t imagine there is anyone more thoughtful, brilliant, or passionate about their community.” S.M.
