Fall Back into a Routine Ah fall! The days get shorter, there’s a nip in the air and we start to retreat indoors. Fall often feels like the start of a new year as people get back to routines and schedules and the kids go back to school. It’s a great time of year to improve a skill, learn something new or help others by volunteering your time.

ACCESSIBLE RECREATION The City of Surrey offers many accessible and inclusive spaces, programs and opportunities for people of all abilities. Recreation Surrey has adaptive programs and sports and we are continuing to make our spaces accessible for everyone. Subscribe to our Inclusive Recreation newsletter at surrey.ca/enews and receive regular updates on inclusive and adapted programs delivered directly to your inbox.

Accessible spaces Rick Hansen Foundation’s Accessibility Certification program has certified 29 city facilities and awarded an Accessibility Gold certification to four of our centres. Looking for specific equipment or need to know if a washroom is accessible? This information can now be found on each facility’s webpage.

Inclusive Fitness Kits Our weight rooms are equipped with Inclusive Fitness Kits. The kits are available at the weight room desk and feature items that help adapt exercises. They include: Active Hands gripping aids, weight lifting hooks, loop resistance bands, and wrist/ ankle weights.

Flexible Fitness Equipment Many strength training and cardio

equipment pieces inside our fitness centres can be easily modified. Benches or seats can be moved out of the way and heights and tensions can be adjusted for strength, height and range of motion. Our fitness facilities have a wide range of equipment that may include recumbent elliptical machines, arm bikes, medicine balls with straps, adapted seat attachments, raised stretching mats and more!

Sensory Friendly Spaces A sensory friendly space is a calm and quiet area designed to create a supportive environment for individuals who have autism spectrum disorder, anxiety or sensory-processing needs. Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre is now home to B.C.’s first aquatics sensory friendly space, which is located on the second floor. Party for the Planet, Surrey International Children’s Festival, Canada Day, Fusion Festival, andTree Lighting Festival also offer sensory friendly spaces. Ask event staff about these quiet and calming areas.

Inclusive Fitness Our fitness staff, weight room attendants and personal trainers have received inclusive fitness training to adapt exercises for people with disabilities. Ask our staff how to modify an exercise, adapt a machine or get advice on new ways to exercise.
