Aquatics Learn to Swim

LESSONS FOR ALL We are proud to offer the Canadian Red Cross swim program at all City of Surrey pools. This progression based program is designed to teach swimmers lifelong skills to safely enjoy aquatic pursuits. From toddlers to adults, we have lessons for all ages and abilities. Not sure what to register for? We offer free swim assessments during public swim times.

Family Lessons Learn to swim as a Family! Look for our Swim Basics Beginner-Family Lessons for swimming levels 1-4 and our Swim Strokes Advanced – Family Lessons for swimming levels 5-10. Each class can accommodate ten family members. Parent Participation Programs Features of these programs include in-water participation by a caregiver or guardian and include a progress card for participants to track their swim development. This program is for babies 4-12months old with the participation of a caregiver. You will learn safe ways to support and hold your baby in the water while your child gets comfortable on their front, back, and underwater. You will learn age-appropriate water safety and first aid skills for your baby. SWIM PRESCHOOL – LEVEL 2 (DUCK) This program is for babies and toddlers 12-24months old with the participation of a caregiver. Your child will learn basic movements in the water, buoyancy, floating techniques and how to enter and exit shallow water. You will both learn age-appropriate water safety and first aid skills. SWIM PRESCHOOL – LEVEL 1 (STARFISH) Red Cross Swim Preschool 3-5yrs Features of this program include a progress book so participants can easily track their success, stickers for level completion, and a smoother transition into the Red Cross Swim Kids program. These programs do not require an in-water caregiver. SWIM PRESCHOOL 4 (SEA OTTER) Sign up your child to learn to open their eyes underwater, develop basic floats and glides, and learn to swim 1 meter. Using games and other fun activities swimmers learn age-appropriate water safety skills. SWIM PRESCHOOL 5 (SALAMANDER) Using games and activities, swimmers learn water safety, how to swim 2 meters, further develop basic floats, increase their distance on front and back glides and develop their roll-over glides and front swims. SWIM PRESCHOOL 6 (SUNFISH) Swimmers learn to swim 5 meters on their front and back, learn sideglides and begin using rhythmic breathing. Using games and activities, swimmers learn deep-water skills and age-appropriate water safety skills. SWIM PRESCHOOL 7 (CROCODILE) Using games and activities, swimmers use kicking drills to increase their swimming distance to 7-10 meters and learn deep-water skills. Swimmers further develop their SWIM PRESCHOOL – LEVEL 3 (SEA TURTLE) This program is for 2-3 year olds with the participation of a caregiver. Your child will learn basic movements in the water, submersions, floating techniques and how to enter and exit shallow water. You will both learn age- appropriate water safety and first aid skills.

Red Cross Swim Kids 5-12yrs Learn to swim with Red Cross Swim Kids! Features of this program include a progress book so participants can easily track their success, badges for level completion, and a smoother transition into Aquatic Leadership Programs like Canadian Swim Patrol. Each swimmer is taught to their individual learner needs and at their own pace. SWIM KIDS 1 Swimmers work on developing confidence and comfort in the water, learn front and back floats, glides and swims. SWIM KIDS 2 Swimmers learn front and back glides with flutter kick, develop front swim, complete deep water activities (assisted) and swim 10 metres. SWIM KIDS 3 Swimmers increase their distance on front and back glides with flutter kick, perform flutter kick unassisted, wear a portable floatation device (PFD) in deep water, float in deep water, and swim 15 metres continuously. SWIM KIDS 4 Swimmers learn back swim with shoulder roll and kick, front crawl (10m), perform kneeling dives, introduction to sculling and swim 25 metres continuously. SWIM KIDS 5 Swimmers develop front crawl (15m), learn back crawl (15m) and whip kick on back, learn stride dives and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back, and swim 50 metres continuously. SWIM KIDS 6 Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (25m), learn elementary back stroke (15m), learn dolphin kick, tread water in deep water, perform front dives, and swim 75 metres continuously. SWIM KIDS LEVEL 7 Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m), learn front scull, perform whip kick on front and dolphin kick, learn stride entries and swim 150 metres continuously. SWIM KIDS LEVEL 8 Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (75m) and elementary back stroke (25m), learn breast stroke (15m), learn eggbeater/tread water, perform feet-first surface dives and standing shallow dives, and Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), learn sidestroke kick, perform head-first surface dives, and swim 400 metres continuously. SWIM KIDS LEVEL 10 Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (50m), learn sidestroke (25m), perform dolphin kick (vertical), learn feet first and head first surface dives with underwater swim, and swim 500 metres continuously. Private Swim Lessons Finish items in a level or focus on a specific skill. Half hour lesson with a skilled instructor. Need some Stroke Correction? Try a swim clinic to polish your technique. Limit of 6 kids per class, focusing on stroke correction in each 30 minute session. swim 300 metres continuously. SWIM KIDS LEVEL 9

Canadian Swim Patrol 8-12yrs The Canadian Swim Patrol (CSP) is a 3-level pre-Bronze award progression that delivers “work hard/play hard” training for skilled swimmers 8-12 years old. Canadian Swim Patrol is designed to take young swimmers beyond the learn-to-swim program and to provide them with basic lifesaving skills. ROOKIE PATROL Program features stroke development, fitness (100m endurance swim), self rescue, assessment of a conscious injured patient requiring EMS, treatment of bleeding and

throwing assist rescues. RANGER PATROL

Program features continued stroke development and personal fitness (200m endurance swim), assessment of an unconscious breathing patient requiring EMS, treatment of choking and an introduction to in-water

rescue techniques. STAR PATROL

Program features continued stroke development and personal fitness (300m endurance swim), rescue of an unconscious breathing patient in the water, treatment of respiratory distress (such as asthma and allergic reactions) and treatment of fractures. Red Cross Swim - Youth 13-18yrs and Adults 19yrs+ Whether you are a non-swimmer, have aged- out of the Swim Kids program, are wanting to master a stroke, or are a strong swimmer who wants a structured workout, we have the program for you! Program includes a Swim Journal to track your goals and progress. SWIM BASICS LEVEL 1 Swimmers learn basic swimming skills with a focus on increasing comfort level and confidence in the water through floats, glides, kicking and an introduction to front swim. SWIM BASICS LEVEL 2 Swimmers further develop front crawl, learn back crawl, establish comfort in deep water, and increase swimming distances. Work with your Water Safety Instructor to set goals and develop your swimming skills. SWIM STROKES Intended for swimmers who have mastered learning to swim and wish to focus on improving their strokes and increasing their distance. Work with your certified Water Safety Instructor to develop a personalized swim plan that meets your swimming goals. Adapted Programs Supported swim lessons for children and youth with disabilities, in partnership with Surrey Association for Community Living. Red Cross Swim Adapted - One-to-One lessons for children and youth. IF YOU REQUIRE SUPPORT IN THE POOL FOR SWIM LESSONS OR PUBLIC SWIM A volunteer, caregiver, family member, or external staff of at least 15 years of age can attend lessons or public swim at no cost to provide additional in-water support for individuals who require physical, cognitive, behavioral, sensory and/or social integration assistance. For lessons please inform a pool supervisor upon registration and for public swim prior to entry to pool.
