Public Art IN SURREY

THE RIVERS THAT CONNECT US kʼwyʼiʼyʼe Spring Salmon Studio Drew Atkins, Phyllis Atkins, and Aaron Jordan This upcoming public artwork will be installed in front of the Museum of Surrey in Spring 2020.The sculpture will consist of four monumental paddles raised in a traditional welcoming gesture, honouring the diversity of Surrey, welcoming newcomers, and recognizing the traditional lands of the Coast Salish peoples. The four paddles also represent the four directions of the medicine wheel, a traditional teaching tool that brings together four races, four stages of the life cycle, and four cardinal directions. Beneath the paddles will be a round medallion base with a design inspired by the form of a Coast Salish spindle whorl. The medallion’s designs represent the seven traditional teachings of the Coast Salish peoples: health, happiness, generations, humility, forgiveness, understanding, and teaching.
