FUTURE INITIATIVES, GOALS & OBJECTIVES
PUBLIC SAFETY
• Complete the policing transition, with SPS taking over all policing districts and activities in Surrey in alignment with the gradual demobilization of the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (“SPOSU”); • Continue to work with the City and Surrey Police Board to ensure policing transition costs are aligned with the financial plan; • Develop annual hiring plans for recruits, experienced officers, and civilians according to each year’s budget allocation and the policing transition plan; • Launch a pilot program for body-worn cameras along with clear communication to the public on how these cameras and captured footage will be used to enhance police transparency and accountability, while respecting the privacy of the public; • Implement the use of RPAS (drones) to support public safety and advance policing operations during large-scale events, missing person searches, accident scenes, etc., while respecting the privacy of the public;
• Research national and international best practices for police wellness initiatives and continue to refine SPS’s Wellness Program for sworn and civilian employees; • Bolster partnerships with the City of Surrey and key stakeholders who assist the unhoused, mentally ill, and addicted; • In collaboration with staff and key stakeholders, conduct a thorough assessment of all units, programs, and services to assess mandates, efficacy, gaps, and resourcing; • Collate baseline crime trend statistics and develop localized strategies to address crime trends for each policing district in Surrey; • Research baseline police response to nuisance, non-criminal call trends and
develop proactive strategies to mitigate these issues in Surrey communities;
