Did you know the ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface and is home to a wealth of biodiversity? Scientists estimate that about 2.2 million species of plants and animals live in the ocean.
Celebrate World Ocean Day by learning more at one of these ocean-themed programs. Museum of Surrey: Ocean Bound May 27–September 7 Dive into a watershed adventure and discover how our actions affect the ocean! Explore a hands-on watershed model, steer a giant sub, stop pollutants from sneaking through storm drains, and check out awesome projects that protect Surrey’s waterways. Drop-in anytime during operating hours. All ages. Interpretive Beach Walk May 29, 9-11am Join this guided beach walk and discover marine creatures that have evolved to withstand extreme conditions in their tidal habitat. Bring water and a snack, wear beach shoes, and dress for the weather. All ages. Bayview Park (14586 Marine Dr, White Rock). Meet at the West Beach boat ramp. Wild Salmon Day June 1, 11am-3pm Celebrate Wild Salmon Day by exploring the creeks in Hyland Creek Park. Get to know the fish species living in the creeks and about habitat projects in the area. Expand your knowledge this World Ocean Day with our Lunch & Learn webinar! Hear from experts at Parks Canada and the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Whale Protection Unit as they dive into the cetaceans of the Salish Sea, species at risk in the Gulf Islands, and the ongoing efforts to protect them.
