PUBLIC SAFETY— SURREY FIRE SERVICE
2025 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
INCLUSION
• Continued to work with BC Emergency Health Services (“BCEHS”) to establish collaborative working groups to seek alternative, more efficient approaches for Fire Services and Ambulance Services involvement in responding to medical emergencies in Surrey; • Significantly expanded public firefighting workshop offerings to improve accessibility, inclusion, and career awareness. A total of 36 public workshops were delivered throughout the year, including female only sessions as well as workshops open to all participants; • Implemented a multi-modal communication strategy to share fire service career information with the South Asian community, with the goal of encouraging applications from a more diverse and representative pool of candidates; • Surrey Fire Service fulfilled its reporting and compliance obligations for the annual WorkSafeBC Certificate of Recognition (“COR”) audit, which was conducted as part of the City of Surrey’s broader corporate COR audit;
• Equity, Inclusion and Diversity training was delivered to firefighter recruit classes to increase cultural sensitivity and awareness. Staff participated in tactical visits to Semiahmoo First Nation (“SFN”) land in coordination with SFN representatives. New training content introducing trauma informed care concepts have been
incorporated in First Responder medical training for staff; and
Partnered with Surrey Schools to deliver a successful Youth Firefighting Academy to attract and increase diversity in the fire service.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT & NEIGHBOR-
• Major infrastructure upgrades, including fire hall expansions and a new
replacement facility, are underway to meet increasing operational and community needs. Funding for these projects relies on a Fire Protection Development Cost Charge bylaw being adopted as part of the 2025 Development Cost Charges bylaw update;
