Appendix 1 – Surrey 2050

Absolute Zero (Emissions)

means entirely eliminating greenhouse gas emissions without relying on negative emissions or offsets.

means housing designed, constructed, or modified so that individuals with physical, sensory, or mobility disabilities can enter, navigate, and use the unit independently and safely.

Accessible Unit

Active Transportation

means forms of travel that rely primarily on human power, such as walking and cycling.

Adaptable Housing means housing designed with built-in flexibility to easily accommodate future accessibility modifications, allowing people to "age in place" or live independently as their needs change.

Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR)

means provincially designated lands in which agriculture is recognized as the priority use, as shown on official ALR maps and regulated by the Agricultural Land Commission under the Agricultural Land Commission Act .

“ As-of-Right ” Zoning

means development permitted outright under existing zoning regulations, without requiring discretionary approvals.

means the variety of species and ecosystems on earth and the ecological processes that support it.

Biodiversity

means a transit hub designed for transferring between multiple bus routes, or between buses and Rapid Transit.

Bus Exchange

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)

means a form of bus-based Rapid Transit in which buses operate in exclusive right-of-way and traffic lights are timed to give buses priority.

means a model of production and consumption which eliminates waste through design, reuse, repair and recycling to keep materials in use at their highest value as long as possible.

Circular Economy

City Centre

means the plan area identified by the City Centre Plan .

means the ability to prepare for, withstand and recover from climate impacts including extreme heat, wildfire smoke and flooding.

Climate Resilience

Co-operative Housing

means a type of non-market housing in which units are owned and/or operated by a housing co-operative. Residents are members of the housing co-operative and pay a monthly housing charge instead of rent. means a design approach that reduces opportunities for crime by improving visibility, natural surveillance, access control, and the overall sense of safety in the built environment.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

means the portion of the public right-of-way adjacent to the roadway that is used to support activities such as parking, loading, transit access, active transportation, and street operations.
