2024 Surrey Fire Service Annual Report

Recruit Mental Health Awareness Orientation

Peer Support Team Consisting of Surrey firefighters, this team is trained in basic crisis and suicide intervention. They offer firefighters the opportunity to seek assistance from fellow firefighters rather than having to choose from a list of unfamiliar mental health professionals. Members are equipped with information and resources to assist fellow firefighters in reaching out and accessing the necessary support services.

At the beginning of training, recruits are educated about the potential effects of their role as firefighters and the challenges they may encounter throughout their careers. Additionally, they are provided with the necessary information to access support and services as needed. Recruit Family Night Upon completion of the recruit training, family members of the recruits are invited to attend an information session about the impact of the firefighter profession. Surrey firefighters, management, and a mental health professional are present to explain the available programs and services for all employees. This proactive measure ensures family members are equipped with the necessary information to support their loved ones, recognize when assistance might be needed, and are aware of the resources available. Wellness Manual All employees are provided with a comprehensive booklet developed by Surrey Fire Services that covers various aspects of wellness, including physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being. This booklet provides information on support services available, relevant policies, guidelines, contact information and documents.

Critical Incident Stress Management

Following potentially traumatic events, firefighters are provided with the opportunity to engage in peer-led defusing sessions, allowing the opportunity to discuss emotionally challenging incidents and receive educational materials for themselves and their families. Trained firefighters meet with the crews involved in significant incidents, offering all members the opportunity to discuss the incident and provide follow up support and resources as necessary. Psychological Oversight and Support The Fire Service employs the services of a psychologist to assist in program development, provide clinical oversight of in-house programs, conduct resiliency assessment of new hires, and offer on-call services and assistance. Resiliency Surrey Fire Services implemented the Resilient Minds program to all operations staff. The program aims to raise awareness and equip firefighters with the necessary tools to understand the psychological impact of their careers on themselves and their colleagues. Additionally, it aims to recognize and assist our clients who are experiencing mental health issues.
