SOLID WASTE
INFRASTRUCTURE
• Successfully Piloted a five-month free waste drop-off event from May 1 to September 25, 2024 at the Central Surrey and North Surrey Recycling and Waste Centres. The event was expanded from the 2023 Disposal Days event in response to feedback received from residents and allowed more time to drop off unwanted items, participation, an increase in tonnage delivered and lower costs than the previous similar events. Over 21,000 loads, an increase of 195% and 3,304 tonnes were dropped off an increase of 175% from previous years; • Launched ‘Clean-Blitz’ pilot program aiming to build community pride by keeping the City clean and beautiful. City crews collected 2,62 bags of litter and removed 3,107 dumped items throughout the City; similar to the Pop-Up Junk events. The pilot drop-off event was very successful, resulting in higher
• Piloted Prairie Robotics AI technology which uses near real-time cameras and software to identify contamination in recycling carts, take pictures of the contamination, and send personalized feedback postcards to residents, highlighting the specific contamination with the picture. The information includes education on “what goes in” or “what stays out” of recycling carts; • Delivered various cleanup programs for the Focus Newton project including increasing litter collection to two-times per week, conducting two-four cleanups per week, expanding the number of solar waste compactors; and • In collaboration with Parks, Recreation & Culture hosted Our City campaign to inspire and empower residents to take an active role in enhancing their neighbourhoods and engaging in activities and projects that improve livability, cleanliness, foster pride and encourage community connections.
FUTURE INITIATIVES, GOALS & OBJECTIVES

Continue to work with Convertus, and collaborate with Metro Vancouver or other regional municipalities on expanding the Surrey Biofuel Facility to support the Metro Vancouver in-region solution for managing organic waste; and
• Continue to collaborate with Metro Vancouver to rezone land to permit expansion of the North Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre and commence design for a full-scale recycling depot which will increase convenient recycling options for residents and businesses.
