Property Tax Deferments

Mayor’s Message

The Province of BC offers low interest loan programs to help qualified BC homeowners pay all or part of their annual property taxes on their principal residence. There are two programs available to property owners who live in their home and meet the eligibility requirements, a Families with Children program, and the Regular Tax Deferment program. For more information on deferment programs or to apply online visit gov.bc.ca/propertytaxdeferment or call 1-888-355-2700 . Some of the items on your tax notice cannot be deferred. Owners are required to make payment for user fees (garbage, recycling, organics and/or secondary suite fees), if applicable, and claim your Home Owner Grant, if eligible, to avoid penalties. If the deferral application is not approved, a penalty may apply. Contact Property and Payment Services for information on the non-deferrable portion of your bill, and your payment options. Call 604-591-4181 or visit surrey.ca/propertytaxes . Paying Out Your Existing Loan: You can repay all or part of your tax deferment loan any time during the year. Payments must be made directly to the Province of BC. Loan repayments should not be made to the City. Contact the Tax Deferment Office for more information at 1-888-355-2700 or TaxDeferment@gov.bc.ca .

In these challenging and uncertain economic times, Council is addressing affordability by keeping taxes low while addressing

the needs of our growing community. Last year, we reached a critical crossroads regarding our police service. Faced with the looming challenge of funding the imposed Surrey Police Service, we recognized that substantial tax increases would not be in the best interest of our residents. In response, our Council took decisive action to challenge this, successfully negotiating provincial funding of up to $250 million to help offset these costs. This critical support has enabled us to propose a modest property tax increase of just 2.8% plus a 1% road levy increase, among the lowest in the Metro Vancouver area. In addition to maintaining affordability, we have made it a priority to invest directly in the safety of our community. For 2025, we plan to hire 20 additional Fire Services positions and 10 bylaw enforcement officers, along with funding 25 new police positions, as we have the past two years. These measures reflect our unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe and secure city for all. Moreover, we are embarking on an ambitious $701 million Capital Plan that will fund 36 projects over the next five years that will transform our city. Key initiatives include a 10,000-seat Sports and Entertainment Arena, new and expanded ice and community centers, sports fields and an interactive Art Museum in City Centre. From new road construction to the creation of new entertainment districts, Council is making historic investments to ensure our City remains, vibrant and sustainable not only for the Surrey of today, but for future generations.
