MESSAGE FROM Mayor Doug McCallum This Recreation Guide is your invitation to participate, play, and explore. Whether you are looking to get fit, play a sport, or learn a new dance step, Recreation Surrey has thousands of programs for all ages and all levels of ability. Surrey is renowned for our recreation offerings and we are continually looking for opportunities to expand our parkland and upgrade our facilities. In 2019, more than 165 acres of new parks and green spaces have been added in Surrey through parkland acquisition. The North Surrey Sport and Ice Complex is now fully open with a state-of-the-art fitness centre, indoor cycling space and yoga studio. The ice complex is fully accessible and has quickly become a favourite destination for public skating and a wide range of ice sports. The largest inclusive playground in Surrey opened in October at Unwin Park in Newton. At 12,000 square feet, the Jumpstart Playground provides an imaginative and accessible play space for children of all abilities to play together. This summer, the new Clayton Community Centre will be completed. Aside from being a hub for recreation, library, arts and parks amenities, the new Clayton Community Centre has been designed to consume less energy than conventional buildings, thus, reducing operating costs and the City’s carbon footprint. The City of Surrey takes great pride in ensuring our residents have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle, regardless of income or ability. That’s why City Council implemented a 75% discount on recreation centre passes and drop-in admissions for seniors 70 years and older. Since the new discount was put in place at the start of 2019, there has been 50,000 additional visits by seniors to our recreation facilities. As we continue to build strong, healthy communities where people of all ages can be active participants and engaged for life, I want to invite you to take full advantage of our recreation facilities and the quality programs led by our highly trained staff. A healthy and active lifestyle awaits you right here in Surrey.

Where is the Name from? Pickleball has nothing to do with pickles. Legend has it that it’s named after the inventor — a former U.S. Congressman Joel Pritchard’s family dog, Pickles, who liked to chase a ball. What are the Benefits of Playing Pickleball? Pickleball has a smaller court compared to tennis, which makes the play more compact. It is fast-paced and a combination of cardio and eye- hand coordination. Pickleball is also a great way to stay socially connected. Nothing like a friendly competition to reduce stress and improve health.
